Election of Sen.Miriam as ICC judge hailed
Statement of Sen. Pia S. Cayetano
“I convey my warmest congratulations to our colleague, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago for being elected as judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC). With her unquestionable expertise in international and constitutional law, exemplary academic achievements, and solid track record in public service, Sen. Miriam is very much qualified for the position and will be a great addition to the ICC.
“Naturally I am saddened because I will lose a friend, a mentor, and an ally in the fight for women’s rights. The Senate as an institution will lose one of its brightest and sharpest minds, but the honor she brings to our country as an ICC judge is an unparalleled achievement that each one of us should be happy and proud of.
“Sen. Miriam inspires us to continue to pursue the principles she has fought for in the Senate, including justice for all and putting an end to all forms of gender indiscrimination through the passage of pro-women legislation, foremost of which is the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.”
