Statement of Sen. Pia S. Cayetano
On the Bangsamoro Basic Law

“Like most Filipinos, I yearn for peace, but this can only be attained if all sides sincerely desire and work towards the same goal. As a member of the Senate, I have been exploring ways to pursue peace and genuine development in Mindanao through the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), but these recent events give us reason to think if both parties are pursuing the peace process with sincerity.”

“The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) yesterday stated that passing the BBL is the only way to go, and that ‘any hesitation would breed more complications.’ But the prospects for peace are obviously complicated by the Mamasapano clash that killed 44 uniformed officers. The MILF cannot isolate this incident and say it does not affect our peace efforts. At the very least they, must commit to cooperate to a full investigation of the incident.”

“Who does not want peace? Only mercenaries and those who profit from armed conflict would want conflict. So it is clear that we would want the peace process to continue, but we cannot just ignore how this recent incident has highlighted the fragility of the situation and raised questions about the sincerity of the groups involved. The government has already gone great lengths to push for the success of the peace process. Nothing less should be expected from the MILF leadership.” #
