Protect women, children in Zamboanga conflict

Prioritize safety of women, children caught in Zamboanga conflict

Statement of Sen. Pia S. Cayetano

9 September 2013

“I condemn the siege launched by armed individuals on Zamboanga City, including the reported use of civilians as human shields.  This latest attack should not distract the government and other well-meaning sectors from pursuing a substantial and long-lasting peace agreement for the people of Mindanao.

“At the same time I urge the government to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the civilian population, most especially the women and children, in affected areas.

“Various international instruments, including the United Nations Declaration on the Protection of Women and Children in Emergency and Armed Conflict, call for their special protection and care as the most vulnerable sectors during crisis and conflict situations.”
