Sen. Pia: ‘Donaire to emerge stronger, wiser from loss’
Senator Pia S. Cayetano today expressed her support to Filipino boxing icon Nonito Donaire Jr., who lost his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight belt via unanimous decision to Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux in their unification title fight yesterday.
“The mark of true champions is their ability to learn and rise from their mistakes,” said Cayetano, a sports enthusiast and triathlete. “Nonito Donaire Jr.’s loss is but a temporary setback in his phenomenal career.”
She added: “I personally know Nonito; he is like a brother to the Cayetanos. He is not only a disciplined athlete and God-fearing fighter, but also a family man: A loving husband to his wife, and a soon-to-be father.”
Finally, the senator took exception to talk that Donaire’s loss could signal the end of the road for the multi-titled fighter and the end of an era for Philippine boxing. “I know he’ll come out stronger and wiser from this experience and emerge victorious again.”
