Cayetano lauds Davao del Norte governor for prioritizing sports, urges local governments to support young athletes
Senator Pia S. Cayetano today lauded Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario for including sports development as a priority in the province, opening opportunities for young athletes to develop their character through sports and gearing them up to become competitive in the national and international levels.
Cayetano, a triathlete and sports advocate, joined Gov. Del Rosario on Monday for the opening of the P243-million, 11-hectare Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Complex. The facility was unveiled in time for the province’s hosting of this year’s Davao Region Athletics Association (DAVRAA) games. The region’s qualifying event for the Palarong Pambansa, DAVRAA brings together school-based elementary and high school athletes from six cities and four provinces in the Davao region.
In her speech, Cayetano reminded the young athletes that it takes discipline to excel in sports. She also encouraged them to use the same discipline they acquire through sports in other aspects of their life.
“I congratulate Gov. Del Rosario for the completion of the Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Complex and for ably hosting the Davao regional games. The facility meets world standards in many aspects, including an Olympic-size pool with warm-up pool, an eight-lane rubberized oval, outdoor playing court and grand stand,” she said.
“This is a dream-come-true not only for the governor and the people of Davao del Norte, but also for me. I was also here with Gov. Del Rosario at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the project back in 2008,” she added.
The senator said she found it encouraging that sports development is being actively promoted by the local government in her visit to three areas in Mindanao over the last two weeks, including Dipolog City and Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte, and Davao del Norte.
“Mindanao’s untapped potential in sports will only be realized if local governments seriously pursue and spend for grassroots sports development and continue to discover young aspiring athletes.”
“The region has produced some of our top athletes today, including world champions Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire Jr. and elite triathlete Neil Catiil, to name just a few. Who knows our next Olympic medal could come from an athlete in Mindanao?” she asked. (Photos courtesy of the Office of Davao Del Norte Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario.)
