MANILA, Philippines – While the government is undertaking efforts to increase the excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol products, the Senate will start debates on the bill that aims to mandate picture-based health warnings on cigarette and other tobacco products’ packages.

Sen. Pia Cayetano, chair of the Senate committee on health and demography, will sponsor the committee report on Senate Bill 3283 or the proposed Picture-Based Health Warning Law next week when Congress resumes its sessions.

“To address some health/smoking concerns, I’m sponsoring the bill on graphic warning on tobacco products next week,” Cayetano said in her Twitter account.

Under the bill, all cigarette and other tobacco products’ packages, including their package inserts and any outside packaging and labeling, must bear “highly visible, full-color picture-based health warnings.” #
