Sen. Pia on Sereno’s CJ appointment:
“A woman in-charge is always a refreshing start”
Senator Pia S. Cayetano today joined well-wishers in welcoming the country’s very first woman Chief Justice, Maria Lourdes Sereno, who was sworn in by President Benigno Aquino III in Malacanang this morning.
Cayetano, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Youth, Women and Family Relations, called Sereno’s appointment a ‘refreshing start,’ following the Senate impeachment trial which led to the removal of then Chief Justice Renato Corona from office.
“The judiciary, like the legislature, is still a male-dominated institution,” said Cayetano, who is one of only three women senators in the 23-member upper chamber of Congress. “A woman in-charge is always a refreshing start.”
She added, “It is my hope that the appointment of the first ever female Chief Justice should result in a more gender-sensitive judiciary.”
“I wish our new Chief Justice all the best. It’s a tough job. But like they say, when you want the best man for the job, pick a woman.”#
